Pleasure

I went on a monster run this morning, somewhat unexpectedly: I kinda planned to do 20k but it was going so well that I did an extra lap and hit 31, at an almost unbelievable (well, for me) pace.

One of the nice things about running is all that time to let the mind wander. (On shorter runs, I listen to podcasts, but for longer ones, usually music).

Today I got thinking about Chariots of Fire. I think I liked this movie, but it was so long ago and I was such a different person then! Anyway, this line from it has always resonated, even though back then, I was by no means a runner (started in my late 20's, I guess):

When I run, I can feel his pleasure.

It's spoken by, IIRC, character's name was Eric Liddell, a real person, who was motivated by religious faith. I, obviously, am hugely NOT motivated by religious faith, but even so, I think it's a lovely line, and I think I kinda know what he meant.

As far as I know not from the movie, but this is also an Eric Liddell quote that I found:

I honestly don't know what this means. Does it mean we are losers, or at least detsined to be miserable, unless we strive for first place? I hope not.
